43rd EUROPEAN STUDY GROUP WITH INDUSTRY

ESGI (European Study Group with Industry) is Europe's leading workshop
bringing together academic mathematicians and industrial and commercial
companies. These week-long workshops have been held annually since 1968 and
were previously known as the Oxford Study Groups with Industry, where leading
mathematicians were attracted to work on industrial problems. The problems were
in areas such as heat and mass transfer, fluid flow, granular materials,
electromagnetic fields, financial mathematics and option trading and other
processes amenable to modelling using continuum mechanics. But in principle
there are no limitations on the types of problems that can be addressed or the
types of mathematics which can be used in these workshops. All those interested
in mathematical modelling and the solution of current real-world problems are
invited to participate.
It offers a unique opportunity for industrialists
to work face to face with established applied mathematicians on challenging
industrial and commercial problems. In the past links have been forged leading
to many long-term collaborations. Currently the Study Groups are coordinated by
the Smith
Institute for Industrial Mathematics and System Engineering under a Faraday
Partnership with support from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). In
addition, Lancaster University will receive major support for ESGI from the
Engineering and Physical Sciences Research
Council (EPSRC) and London Mathematical
Society (LMS).
In terms of format, Lancaster Study Group is a 4-day workshop that will address 8 problems posed by industrial delegates. On the first day, the workshop will begin with a plenary meeting where each problem is presented by an industrial representative from the R&D sector of the associated company according to their research interests. Academic participants then allocate themselves to groups that tackle each problem. In parallel, lectures on subjects related to these problems will be given by invited speakers. Each group has available a dedicated seminar room for its work. One of the academics in each group (with expertise in the relevant area and experience) acts as coordinator and prepares a final presentation for the last day of the meeting. Subsequently, a final report is written on each problem and these are assembled to form the Study Group Final Report.
The registration, accommodation
and meals for academic participants are FREE.
The fares for postgraduate
students in mathematics from UK Universities may be (fully or partially)
covered. Please retain your travel receipts. Claim forms are to be made
available.
The registration fee for industrial participants is £1500 per problem, which contributes towards the costs of the meeting. However, small or medium-sized companies (SMEs) that are attending a Study Group for the first time currently have their problem presentation fee covered by the Smith Institute Faraday Partnership, as one of its initiatives to encourage smaller businesses to establish industrial-academic collaborations.
